Life Drawing week 4

Should have posted this ages ago. This was a particularly enjoyable week for me. Tried a technique that would influence the next 4 weeks. You can see it develop over the first 3 drawings here.

  These 2 are where I inverted the images in photoshop. I unfortunately love doing this.

 Added the dark under the arms later - kinda think it works in the thumbnail, not so sure once it's at full size.

Umbrellas

So here's the piece I submitted for the charity auction in work. Its a piece I did ages ago for a boulder gallery Franners was doing. It's originally part of a triptych but Sinead loves the other drawings so i kept them. Probably do some more now too.

The piece itself is an A6 postcard drawn using blue ink. Think my favorite umbrella is the one at the back.

2 posts in one night!

So in work we have a gallery set up for a charity auction. And Estrela and Bianca have been pushing for people to produce some work. The image I submitted was an old "umbrela" one so I'll post that tomorrow. But here's the image I did tonight.

Obviously I'm a huge Mignola fan, and well it does have an effect on my work. But hey, that can't be bad right. The image is named after the song I was listening to on the way home from work today, by the great Wolf Parade.

It was maybe gonna be a profile pic change for facebook too.

Life drawin'

So Boulder has set up life drawing sessions for us in work. Been a couple of years since I sat in a room doing this, so alot of the work was fairly rough, but I was happy with a couple, and most had some sections I liked.  They were all gesture drawings ranging from 30 secs to 5 mins.

 

 The First 2 were from the first 30 mins section. The first drawing was picked out during the review as a good drawing by the people in the class. Was a bit shocked by that. The last drawing was picked out during the second review. It was picked for the change in approach I used. I tried to use purely straight lines for it. I wanted the pose to look ridget like model appeared to be.

Within 5 minutes of being in the class I was pretty happy. Although I dropped into some old techniques I like to think Beth Spenader was sitting behind me egging me on again. The drawing off the page was at times a deliberate thing. Working on A3 I wanted the drawings to be too big for the page (something Beth use to encourage me to do in college)

Finally some art

Here's the first draft of a piece I was asked to do for Sinead's uncle. Its a family portrait of all of Sinead's siblings, and of the 3 (soon to be 4) grandchildren.  Tried out a couple of things in this that I think worked, or Sinead loved. The playing card "full house" motif. The 2 older grandchildren are the largest heads, and the 2 youngest are right in the middle. The 3 older siblings are at the top and the 3 younger are at the bottom. Sinead and Alanna are beside each other cause they're the eldest for each generation and Sinead gets to be a little bigger, well, just because it's my drawing and I wanted it that way.

Still have alot to finish on it but am fairly happy with the Emma(the baby) and James(the 5year) and was delighted when John knew straight away that the blob in the centre was the ultrasound of his baby.

Zig and Zag

I worked on this pilot teaser before the trip to thailand. Loved working on it, I was a huge fan of zig and zag as a kid and use to draw em all the time. So I'm quite happy to see it was posted on coldhardflash today.

Hectic Month

Mad how fast this stuff can get away from you. Have a number of things to post but need to scan em or render em.


Anyway, I'll hopefully post something later, just wanted to post this. My friend Dave O'Sullivan has finally set up a website. Only one image on so far cause he's still working on it. So I would recommend checking it out - its class.

3d first shot.avi

So I've returned to 3d. Been a couple of years and about time. (says murray) Mick Plummer is training up some of us in work in Maya. And to be honest its the breath of fresh air I needed. Really enjoying just figuring out the program and stuff. This week he starts on rigged characters, so hopefully in a couple of weeks I'm doing some character stuff.

Anyway, this is my first stab at the good old bouncing ball. Still have to figure out some of the graph editor stuff in detail - but the little nephew is here now. So instead of finishing it, I'm now watching the gruffalo again.

Sketchbook Pro

So Galvin gave me the disk to install sketchbook pro over the weekend and try it out. (I know you told me too Ben)

So i decided to give it a go while watching united get their arses handed to em by Liverpool. Probably a great decision considering Sinead was jumping about screaming with laughter...

Anyway. Last year I was my cousin Stef's groomsman at his wedding. Never prouder to be asked to do something and was so happy top be part of it. Plus it was a brilliant wedding.

So I've been working on a sketch for a little bit and finally got the finger out... really happy with the drawing of Louise, think i might have to tweak one or 2 things on the Stef one thou. Plus I'm not to sure about the "GREY CIRCLE!!!!" in the background. Gonna play around with this (any suggestions welcome.)

Has alot of fun with sketchbook pro, must admit its pretty much the drawing program i've been looking for. Quick, intuitive and easy. Totally recommend it.

Now if only i could hide from the slagging I'm about to get...

More mini pics

 So after posting the last 2 photos, i was encouraged to post a couple more that i toyed around with. (thanks Gill).

The first pic I like because of two reasons.
1 - I like the water - helps with the miniature look
2 - The photo is of Bullock Harbour, and of Western Marina, I worked there a long time ago.

 The second picture is from Turkey. Really like how the group of people and the pillars came out.

The final pic is from the first cycle to Galway i did with the lads - on the bikes are Stef and Al, and both will tell you its awhile since anyone said they we're miniature.

bloody computers!

 Not only did i spend most of yesterday with a hangover(as normal i hear you say), but my stupid computer got infected with a malware program - so all the plans i had for working got thrown out the window. Thanks to Spiderspore, its working again and has a blu-ray drive too now! however with that i haven't got a new drawing to post, so i think I'll post 2 photos i made last year.

 The two photos are attempts at making it look like minitures, was really happy with these 2 when i made em. Not to sure now. (feel free to tell me what you think)

 The first picture is from the trip to Canada a couple of years ago, the second is from my cycle route when I'm in training. kinda wish i had caught it a little closer... will probably try again.

And lastly, wanted to post a drawing - posted the originals of this before. This is the inked version I have on my wall in work. In it you'll also notice i redrew Rob, Anne, and a couple of others. Still not too happy with some of em - Galvin, Moondog, or Aine to mention a few. Alot of these have to be updated, and I've already done newer versions i prefer. Posted this because a good friend of mine from college, Roisin Maguire, told me she really liked my caricatures. So i thought she might like this. (again, don't be afraid to comment)

Old one and a new one!

 So here's 2 Indy themed pics - the one of Indy is an oldie, so I'm sure I've posted it somewhere before. Did this for my msn profile, think during the excitement of the forth film being in production. How quick things change!

The second was a quick "cartoony" sketch i did on the bus during the week. Wanted to push the "stylized" over "likeness" factor.

Wanted to post these under the "eclectic micks related" theme stuff. Mooney's Indy poster was pretty kick-ass. Apparently they're doing cartoon network theme next week - so i better up the game for that!

Sinead Plushy

 Every year i try and make a present for Sinead at christmas. And this year was no exception. Althou, technically i cheated for 2010. After seeing the Lousies work i had to get her to make a plushy of Sinead.

After the class week I've had with her, I had to post these images. Obviously the drawing is the design I did. was pretty happy with how it turned out.

And here's a photo of the doll. I love the little details Louise puts into the dolls. On the Sinead one, shes made the hair individual strips and the hat is separate to the rest of the doll (something my nephew finds amazing!) She added the stitching to the Doc Martins and I love the cheeks and nose.

Sinead was really happy with it and i cant recommend Louise's work enough.

Dearg agus Gorm

Did this real quick obviously, spent the last 2 days celebrating my birthday.

I like the flat colours myself  - its the animator in me. Not too sure if the web motive works aswell on this one, but had to add it to match the black one. Would love to design a spidey show (althou in fairness Cheeks did a bang up job on the last one)

Teehanwolf Tuesdays!

As mentioned before on the blog, I hang around with the lads from the Eclectic Micks - Each week they do a sketch for the blog on their assigned day.(although at the mo, it seems anything goes!)

Anyway - they started actually theming each week, and at Christmas the lads asked me to draw an image for the TMNT week. Well that came and went, and every time i meet Mooney he says i should draw something for 'em. So last week was spidey week, and for all you people who know me, I'm a pretty big fan of Spider-man. So I had to do something for it.

While the micks blog was full of the red and blue, i had to draw the black costume -Ii love the design of it! Really had fun with this and no doubt I'll recolour it red and blue.

 

I figure I'm gonna try and keep up with the lads, its a great idea, although I have no idea what Robotech looks like! (I might be 30 this month but I ain't as old as Moondog!)

A request!

So after the last image i did of Eoghan, he asked me to do a old school Street Fighter 2 one. Its the battle of the champions - Eoghan vs Tom - literally Ryu vs Ken. Both have been playing this game for 20 odd years now. And have been playing the game for 4 years in work against each other.

Gonna do a gif version, just have to recolour Dalton to work in gif form. And probably do some more detail on Tom's hair. Anyway..

I'm pretty happy with this. The Eoghan pose is taken for a photo, and is something he usually does, Tom's head is taken from a photo, and his body should be pretty obvious to any fans of the game.(was running out of time, and really wanted to post this.)

Had great fun doing this, and this no doubt will result in other drawings of friends in pixel art form.

Plus there's nothing better than annoying the lads while they battle for the glory of "Friday pints Champion"!

Freelance Fun!

During the year I made it a prority to get back to doing some work outside of the studio - always good to stretch the aul freelance muscles. But for all the benefits with it there are always the downsides to it.

Did a gig early on and  this is how i discovered the design got used, while driving past it plastered on the back of a bus. Mad!

Still, did enjoy seeing it got picked.

Last year my cousin, Gav, set up a charity organization to support testicular cancer patients.

To show how serious Gav was about it, he stopped drinking alchol for the entire year. This was an amazing feat, especially for a Teehan! I stopped drinking for January to help him, and it was hell! He set up a blog for it too -

Gav raised something like 11000 euro for cancer research. And this year we hope to do the "cycle" in aid of Be My Brother.

Anyway...  this was the logo i designed for the whole thing. To be honest its actually inspired by a family photo of all the Dublin Teehans, so I'm pretty happy with it and even more happy once Gav saw it.

Gav hopes to have a website launched this year for the charity to make it even more official. Here's hoping 2011 is a kick-ass year for it.

NYCC 2010

 Went to the New york Comic con last year - to say I had a brilliant time is an understatement. There with a bunch of the "micks".

The eclectic micks are a group of comic artists that I'm friends with. The group are all talented fuckers and you should go check out the blog right away.

Any way. Here's the sketches I got over there - the first is a J. P. Leon -  the man is pure talent. Its probably my favourite sketch of the con. Pure Class. Leon is a part of The BLVD. more on that later.

Eric Larson sketch - one of my favourite spidey artists, i think i have his whole run on Amazing. While everyone was talking about Todd Mcfarlane, i thought Eric was knocking out far better stuff on the title.
Meeting Eric was great, he has the craziest way of holding a pen while drawing. Plus i watched him go through one of the worst portfolios I've ever seen and still try to be nice to the guy. (it ended with him telling the guy "you really need to learn how to actually draw")

Gabriel Ba - love his work. Really exaggerated stuff. More cartoony, so you can tell why I'd like him. Great guy. Him and Fabio had a queue of women trying to get photos with them.

Fabio Moon - Works with Gabriel a lot, similar styles. I love their stuff.

Bernard Chang - Bernard is part of The BLVD - a collection of brilliant artists that go to cons together. Love this wonder woman he did for me.

Trevor Goring - Loved chatting with Goring and his wife. Goring too is part of BLVD. He told me he wasn't a big fan of drawing sketches at cons, but i still got one out of him. He's working on a book about the history of story-boarding in film, and i cant wait to see it.

New Banner

So did a new banner while watching united. I'm a big gamer and a fan of 8_bit art. So naturally i had to make something to show that. think it turned out quite well.

Gumball

GUMBALL!!!

So, what have I been up to for 2010. Well i spent the last year and a half as a supervising animator on Cartoon Networks next big thing - a show called "The Amazing World of Gumball".

Its gonna air in September of this year and heres hoping its a successful as we think it'll be. A hell of a lot of hard work went into it by alot of very talented people and it was great to work with 'em all.

And when I was at home, I had decided to work on paper and not on the p.c. - So I put everything from the last couple of years into sketchbooks (a photo of my sketchbooks obviously).

Also kept my new years resolution going, decided last year to fill a sketchbook a month. might have only been A6's but I enjoyed it.

Panoramas

Spent Saturday stitching together some photos. I had a few from a couple of different trip and things, but i'm just gonna post a paticularly special one.

This is taken at my friends Simon and Pam's wedding. The wedding was held in a nature park in Sligo and rates as probably one of the best weddings I've ever been to.

I had wanted to post a large version for the lads who were with me to look at, and to not post it on facebook.


The second one is from Christmas day 2010 - its of the pitches behind my folks house, just kinda liked the light and the surrealness of it actually being a white Christmas.

2 in one year!

This might turn into a hobby after all - here's another one of the designs I did for the anchorman character. This one is another inspired by a real person. Was really happy with this. Again this was nothing like what the style is, but i had fun

2009!!!

How did that happen!

I neglected my blog for long enough. And with the encouragement of my friends (you know how you are you shower of c*^ts) I've returned to my blog.

To be honest, the lack of stuff on here is because i grew very tired in the last year of looking at computer screens. Hopefully the new project i'm working on about to begin it'ill help inspire me a little too.

So heres the first post in a year. Theyre 2 portraits I made for my folks for christmas. I got them printed on convas cause i cant paint for shit.

Boulder

Yes yes, i know its 2008 and i havent posted since october of 07, but i've been kinda busy. Anyway. I finish my current contract with boulder quite soon. So as a thing i posted this picture on the company blog. Its a collection of drawings i did of nearly everyone i've worked with there.

To say i was more than happy to have spent the last 4 and a half years working with these people is an understatement.

Working in Boulder was brilliant. The crew were a collection of the most talented people I've gotten to work with.


So to all my friends, i hope to work with everyone again.

Fran is a Legend!

So, i found out quite late about a comic con, some of my friends were going to in Birmingham 2 weeks ago. Mike Mignola was gonna be at it, and as everyone should know by now, he is one of my all time favourite artists. But alas, i couldnt afford to go.

However Fran being the total legend that he is, on seeing my disappointment, he got Mignola to sign a poster for me! So i went home like a child last night in a state of pure joy and took these pics of it.

And then i went and checked Fran's blog last night and look at this! it's Fran gettint the poster signed!

What can you saw about the most amazing voice actor to have ever worked in animation. He's pure class



However, does anyone else notice how much he and Galvin look alike!!!
